Constraint Induced Movement Therapy

CIMT is considered the most effective treatment approach for children with weakness to one side of their body (hemiplegia). It is the most researched and evidence based upper limb therapy. It involves placing a removable cast on the unaffected arm which encourages the use of the affected arm to help strengthen it and improve its overall functional use in everyday tasks.

Each child will be evaluated and an individualized treatment plan will be recommended based on results and parent input. We know that each child and family is unique and will collaborate with you to create a therapy package to meet your needs.

Programs

CIMT/BIT (18 months - 18 years)

CIMT is an intensive therapy program and is typically 3 hours/day for 4 weeks. The first 3 weeks will focus on improving the overall strength and dexterity of the affected hand. The last week the cast is removed and Bimanual Intensive Therapy (BIT) is performed to help integrate the new skills gaind from CIMT and to help improve the coordination of two hands together.

Baby CIMT (3 - 18 months)

Baby-CIMT is a modified version of CIMT for children under the age of 18 months. It is a less intense treatment dosage that involves the same principles as CIMT. Typically, the child would wear a comfortable glove on the unaffected hand, while stimulating the use of the affected hand 30 minutes per day over two 6 week periods. The daily sessions are performed by the parents under the supervision of a therapist who provides weekly guidance in person or via telehealth.

CIMT Consultation (Parent Education)

Online 1:1 session for parents to gain a more in depth understanding about CIMT/Bimanual therapy. Parents will learn how to help their children’s arm/hand movement skills progress and receive guidance to carry out a modified CIMT program at home. Additional consultation sessions can provide updated guidance and environmental modifications to further encourage increased use of their affected arm/hand in daily activities. Consultations may also involve collaboration with other professionals in your child's life such as another therapist. This is not direct therapy.
